Patchwork of the Crosses and Hexies

Easter was good for achieving some hand sewing.

First up some more little hexies. I love this new grape colour that I just 

added to my collection.

I also got two Crosses blocks made - one using one of the same grape fabric.

With this one I tried to a greater variety of colours within the block.

The second one I had fun trying to two different areas of the same fabric. 

In this block everything except the corner blue/grey/green (oh what colour is it?!)

one came from the same fabric.

We have added Patchwork of the Crosses to our projects for our Winter Retreat in July.

Easter Hexies and Crosses

I have two more little hexagons made to add to that collection and one more 

Patchwork of the Crosses block.

The first little hexagon is in stripes radiating outwards with a fussy cut

centrepiece too.

The second has no fussy cutting - just for a change. But I love both of these fabrics.

Then onto the next Patchwork of the Crosses Block. The stripe fabric is

the same as in the hexie above. The purple/grape centre is a new one

in my collection and I like the effect I got with it as well as the colour.

I must admit there is quite a lot of trial and error needed with these cross blocks.

I now have a collection of prepared honeycomb shapes that have been auditioned

and not used. I hope they will fit in somewhere down the track.

The number of people getting involved with Patchwork of the Crosses is 

growing - we seem to be discussing blocks with so many people at the shop 

now - this new 'addiction' certainly is spreading! 

Easter Show and Tell

This is a wool applique cushion that I made for our Easter window display at the shop.

I really enjoyed working with this lovely pastel wool and giant ric-rac. 

We have made up kitsets for this cool cushion.

A New Addiction

Oh dear making these "Patchwork of the Crosses" blocks is so much fun and 

so many people have opted into it with me at the shop that we have had to 

order more copies of the book and more template sets.

But first back to hexies - I am still trying to make several each week.

These two are really quite pretty - I hope they fit in with the others.

Let's see.

I might get away with the pink one but the blue I am not so sure about.

But here is a second opinion!

Now to those 'jolly' crosses. The challenge of making these 

is so much greater. You have so many more options for 'fussy cutting'

and placement.

The book is so good at inspiring you as it has close-ups of several blocks

to get you. started. There are just so many places where you can 'fussy cut' and change the look

of the block with the placement of lights, darks as well as the 'fussy cut' honeycombs.

Hence another addiction - I was going to make a few blocks but now I have

bought the 8 metres of background fabric needed for the whole quilt!!!!

There are fifty six blocks making a quilt measuring 88" by 99".

1930s Feedsack Quilt

This is a little quilt that just took a week to make.

It is only 16" high and 14.5" across.

It is made from authentic American 1930s' Feedsack fabric and just love this little treasure.

I am slowly gathering a collection of these old fabrics that were used as bags selling 

animal feed, flour and all sorts of other grains and products during the 1930s.

Back soon with another 1930s finished quilt and more English paper piecing.

Hexies and Patchwork of the Crosses

I have had a productive time this week with lots of English Paper Piecing and several finishes for quilt for our annual Auckland Quiltmakers' Show.

First up two little hexies.

Then my first block of the Patchwork of the Crosses.

It was so much fun and I think it will get more interesting as I get used to how particular

 fabrics work within this block design. These are honeycomb shapes with 1" sides.

This one is pretty 'matchy matchy'. I think I need to add more colours into them - maybe - we will see as I make more blocks.

Back later in the weekend with some of the finished projects of the last few weeks.
